The Bremen Town Musicians and The Robbers, Ellen Cornett

pastel on paper, 34″x46″, 2010

This work is based on a children’s fairytale in which a group of old, feeble animals are no longer useful on their farm.  They set out together to become musicians and, along the way, outsmart some robbers, find a new home, and live happily ever after.  In the story, one of the robbers tells his friends that a witch scratched him with her long fingers, an ogre poked him with a knife, a giant hit him with a club, and a dragon screamed at the top of her lungs from the rooftop of their cottage. He runs away and the robbers never return!

Which animal do you think did each of these things?

Do you think these animals are no longer useful?

Are they smarter than humans?

The related art activity is painting with pastels on velvet paper.

The new Winter Focus exhibitions featuring the work of Travis Childers, Ellen Cornett, and Matt Ravenstahl opens Friday, January 7, 2011.  The opening reception and artist talk are Saturday, January 8, beginning at 5pm.
